Synopsis : In 1972 a young American cartoonist called Art Spiegelman published a three-page comic strip about the horrific “bedtime stories” his father used to tell him “about life in the old country during the war”. The magazine was called Funny Animals and Spiegelman decided to depict the Jews as mice and Germans as cats.
Later he set about interviewing his father, Vladek, systematically and a much fuller story emerged. The first part of Maus: a Survivor’s Tale was published in 1986, to great acclaim, with the second volume appearing in 1991.
The first comic book to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, Maus also inspired a generation of what became known as graphic novelists to exploit the seeming disjunction between the cartoon strip and serious subject matter.
